Man putting gun in lockboxAs reported at Breitbart.com, San Francisco officials are considering a law that would require citizens and police officers to have lock boxes in their cars if they are carrying a weapon.

Anyone carrying a gun would be required to store them in such a box while traveling in a vehicle. The penalty for failing to have such a lock box would be up to six months in jail and a $10,000 fine.  It is thought that individuals charged with this crime would be eligible for bail.

Crimes May Be Committed With Stolen Gun

The inspiration for this legislation was the death of a women who was killed by a gun stolen from a federal agent’s vehicle. However,  getting a gun out of a lock box may be inconvenient for those who need their gun for self-defense. The bill was headed to committee in December 2015, but it is not clear if the bill had passed or what its current status was.

What Happens if You Are Charged With Breaking Such a Law?

It is possible that you could be taken into custody and formally charged with a crime. This means that you will be taken to jail and have to go through the booking process. However, the amount of time that you spend in jail depends on whether or not you can make bail. If it does pass, the law would be considered a misdemeanor, which means that you would be kept in a county or local jail until your case is heard or you are released on bail. As misdemeanors are considered less serious than felonies, your bail amount will be lower assuming that this was a first-offense or you don’t have other charges on your record.

Bail Bonds Get You Out Quickly

A bail bond is a contract saying that you will make all of your court appearances and abide by any other conditions of your bail. In exchange, a bail bondsmen will provide you with the money needed to get out of jail. Typically, you will pay 10 percent of your bail amount to pay for the bond and other associated costs. Therefore, if your bail is set at $100,000, you can pay $10,000 for a bail bond. Bail bonds companies are generally available 24/7 and on holidays to get you out of jail as soon as possible. Once you make bail, you are released as soon as the booking process is over.

If you are taken into custody on a gun crime or any other crime, you may be able to make bail. Calling a bail bonds company can make it easier to get out of jail in a matter of hours instead of days or weeks. Furthermore, it may be a good idea to contact an attorney who may be able to help you dispute any charge you receive.
