San Francisco Jail
The San Francisco Jail System plays host to many different jails, situated all throughout the city. All facilities house individuals awaiting trial. County Jail #1
This county jail serves as the location where every inmate is booked and released into the system. It does not house any inmates permanently. Visitation isn’t allowed here.
County Jail #2
This jail utilizes a pod layout to house inmates, and has a full capacity of 392 inmates. With the pod layout, visual monitoring of the inmates by the staff is much easier. This is the only San Francisco jail that holds both men and women.
County Jail #3
The third county jail is a standard jail facility that has a total capacity of 426 inmates. It also operates as a records facility. All sentencing information is sent directly to this county jail.
County Jail #4
This jail is found in the Hall of Justice, on the 7th floor. Just over 400 inmates can be housed in this maximum security facility. It also houses an infirmary and laundry facility, as well as an industrial kitchen that can feed nearly 850 inmates three times per day.
County Jail #5
This county jail can be located at #1 Moreland Dr. in San Bruno, and is the largest jail of the county of San Francisco, housing around 768 inmates. It utilizes a pod layout that consists of 16 pods, holding 48 prisoners apiece.
Jail Services
Each jail in San Francisco offer similar services. Some of the premier services found at jails 2-5 include parenting skills classes, SFSD Five Keys Charter School, parent-child visitation and more. All jails offer 24 hour medical service if necessary. A vast selection of these jails provide services tailored to inmates with psychological and mental needs.
Visiting Hours
All jails allow for visitation on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
Jail #2 – Morning Times: 9:20-9:50, 10:00-10:30, and 10:40-11:10
Afternoon Times: 12:20-12:50pm, 1:00-1:30pm, and 1:40-2:10pm
Saturday Afternoon Times: 8:00-8:30 am, 8:40-9:10 am
Sunday Times: General – 9:20-9:50 Administrative – 8:00-8:30 am, 8:40-9:10 am
Jail #3 – This jail is currently closed, so no visitation hours are available.
Jail #4 – For weekdays, all visitations need to be scheduled online in advance. On weekends and holidays, visitation times are divvied up like this:
Administrative Segregation: 7:45-8:15, 8:20-8:50, 8:55-9:25
General Population: 9:30-10:00, 11:10-11:40, 11:45-12:15, 12:20-12:50, 12:55-1:25, 1:30-2:00
Inmate Workers: 11:10-11:40, 11:45-12:15, 12:20-12:50, 12:55-1:25, 1:30-2:00
Jail #5 – Weekday Times
Administrative Segregation – 1:00-1:30, 1:30-2:00
General Population – 8:00-8:30, 8:30-9:00, 9:00-9:30, 9:30-10:00, 10:30-11:00, 11:00-11:30
As for weekends and holidays, visitation times are made by appointment only.
Mail Delivery
When mailing an inmate in jails 2, 4 and 5, there are no limitations as to the number of letters that can be sent or received. Depending on the jail you require, use on of the following three addresses.
