Auburn Court

The Auburn Superior Court Historic Courthouse has been the pride of Placer County, California, since its construction in the 1890s. It once served as the seat of county government, but county administrative offices are now housed elsewhere and the courthouse itself is just one of five judicial locations. Located in Auburn, the county seat, the majestic structure, located at 101 Maple St., is a community landmark and, as such, it is an appropriate location for the Placer County Historical Museum, which occupies the building’s first floor.

Architectural Style

The three-story courthouse, built in the Classical Revival style, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. According to the Auburn Chamber of Commerce, it is one of just a handful of courthouses in northern and central California that have retained their architectural ornamentation and magnificent domes.

The Auburn Court itself replaced an old wooden courthouse that was built at the same site. The dedication of the new courthouse took place in 1898. Almost a century later, a major restoration project, begun in 1986 and completed in 1990, was the focus of another community celebration. A large parade was held, and court personnel and community representatives dressed in the same attire worn for the structure’s 1898 opening.

Growth in the Area

A shortage of space resulted in Placer County’s opening of the Santucci Justice Center in Roseville in 2008. Judicial functions are also carried out at courtrooms at or near the county jail and juvenile detention center in Auburn and at the Tahoe courtroom in Tahoe City. The additional facilities are reflective of a dramatic increase in Pacer County’s population. The county encompasses a geographical area from near Sacramento to the Lake Tahoe region near California’s border with Nevada. It is now home to approximately 360,000 people.

County Clerk’s Office

The judicial system provides no capability at the Auburn courthouse for lawyers, parties to pending cases, and the general public to access court documents. Documents can be reviewed at the main judicial center in Roseville.
On arrival at Superior Court Historic Courthouse, visitors are subject to routine security inspections which generally take no longer than five to ten minutes. There is parking available at the courthouse for both court business and visitors to the museum. In addition, there are some available free parking spaces on adjacent streets. This free parking allows for visits of a maximum of three hours.

The Placer County Historical Museum

The Placer County Historical Museum features artifacts of Native American history and exhibits and history of the region’s gold-mining days, photographs significant to the county’s history, and a historical research center. The museum occupies space that once served vital functions of county government, including what were formerly the offices of the county treasurer, county sheriff, and the clerk of courts. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, excluding holidays, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
